How the Life Candlestick Chart is scored
The Life Candlestick Chart is a heuristic: a rule we chose, applied the same way to every chart, so you can see the rhythm of the decades at a glance. It is not a traditional technique and it does not predict events. Here is every rule and number it uses — taken straight from the code that draws your chart.

Your chart’s element scores
Everything starts from your BaZi chart. Using the support-and-restrain (扶抑) method, the chart’s Day Master strength decides which of the five elements are favourable and which are unfavourable, each in order of importance. Each element gets a score from −1 to +1; elements in neither list score 0.
| Rank | Favourable | Unfavourable |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | +1 | −1 |
| 2 | +0.6 | −0.6 |
| 3 | +0.3 | −0.3 |
Scoring a pillar
A pillar’s score blends its heavenly stem and its earthly branch. For a luck pillar the branch counts more — stem 40%, branch 60% (大運重地支). For a year pillar they count equally — stem 50%, branch 50%.
A branch is scored through the stems hidden inside it, weighted by how much of the branch each one makes up. Before your first luck pillar begins, your month pillar stands in for it.
| Hidden stems in the branch | Weights |
|---|---|
| 1 | 100% |
| 2 | 70% · 30% |
| 3 | 60% · 30% · 10% |
Interactions with your natal chart
Each year’s pillar is compared with your natal year and day pillars. Every traditional relation found adds or subtracts points; the total is capped at −1 to +1. The same relations, with all four natal pillars and with their sizes added up regardless of sign, become the year’s volume — how much is going on, not whether it is good.
| Relation | Points |
|---|---|
| 沖 · Clash | −1 |
| 刑 · Punishment | −0.7 |
| 自刑 · Self-Punishment | −0.7 |
| 害 · Harm | −0.5 |
| 六合 · Six Harmony | +0.7 |
| 半合 · Half Harmony | +0.5 |
| 三合 · Three Harmony | +1 |
| 伏吟 · Repeating Pillar (Fu Yin) | −1 |
| 反吟 · Opposing Pillar (Fan Yin) | −1 |
From scores to candles
- Close — the year’s score, smoothed with a 3-year exponential moving average so one year never jumps alone, kept within 0–100.
- Open — the previous year’s close, so each candle runs from where the last one ended.
- High and low — the body extended by half its height plus a small fixed variation of 0.5–2 points. The variation comes from your chart’s fingerprint, so it is the same every time; it is decoration, and carries no meaning.
- Trend line — a 10-year moving average of the closes.
- The chart runs from birth to age 90.
Chapters
Each ten-year luck pillar is a chapter. Chapters with at least five years on the chart are ranked by their average close: the top three are your strongest chapters, the bottom three your quietest. Quiet is not bad — it is the stretch where the chart, by this rule, asks less of you.
The free view shows five years either side of today; the full chart opens every year.
What it is not
- It is not a forecast. It says nothing about specific events, health, lifespan, money or relationships.
- It is one rule among many. Different schools weigh luck pillars, years and interactions differently; ours is published here so you can judge it.
- It is deterministic. The same chart always draws the same line, and AI never changes it.
